What inspired this piece?

It was inspired by girlhood. This piece is basically representing how, as women, we navigate self loathing, typically in bedroom settings. It’s a very specific experience (…) a hollow and nostalgic feeling.

How do you want your photo to impact viewers?

I think I want people to relate to it and to see their own identity come across in it. It’s a feeling of nostalgia and wonder.

What does each element of the photo symbolize?

The colorful hues, like purple and pink, are obviously meant to represent femininity, but there are also motifs, such as fabric, that represent how I think people view me a lot of the time. I think fabric and clothing are a big part of who I am.

Why did you choose this specific medium over others?

I chose fabric and bows, which represent who I am, and I wanted that to come across as female self-expression.

What does your artistic process look like?

I just put whatever’s on my mind on paper. I don’t necessarily think about concepts or have a set plan of the design.

How would you describe your art style?

My art style is based on a lot of figurative work with people in it, situations that aren’t typical figures. I like drawing from life and painting a lot of, for lack of a better term, girly art.

What does the word art mean to you?

Art is definitely a form of self expression, but it’s also how I transform my concepts into reality, like how a writer conveys ideas and concepts.
