OCTOBER STAFFER OF THE MONTH

Maya Bourak

Why did you decide to join seeds?

I wanted to do it last year, but I needed a foreign language credit, so I couldn't do it, but I wanted to join seeds because in middle school I was part of the publication at my school, but it really wasn't well.

What do you like most about the submissions section so far?

I love looking at other people's work. I love seeing what my fellow students have created and put out there. I'm always going in my classes and encouraging the random people next to me, you know like: [they’ll say] “Oh, I'm a vocal major,” [and I’ll reply,] “but you could submit a song.” I really like looking at my fellow artists and encouraging people to submit so that I can see their work because I will be the one looking at it.

What do you enjoy most about being in Seeds?

I really like the community. I think it definitely feels like a family. And I love being with the submissions team in our little room, just talking about writing and getting to know each other. I think that each section of Seeds is a little tight knit group especially. But overall, we're a really nice large community as well.

What are some goals you are proud of accomplishing in seeds?

In Seeds, I raised a lot of money, that's for sure. I raised a lot of money through family and friends who are very generous, and I'm very thankful to them for supporting our publication.

What about communication arts interests you? How does that translate into Seeds?

I'm a creative writer through and through. I write, I'm a slam poet, I write prose, I write scripts, and now I really expanded how much I write, and I feel like it's definitely become a great outlet for me to express myself, and I think in Seeds, [it] really helps me when I'm analyzing people's work (...) I try to be as unbiased as I can. I just think that my work in creative writing has really helped me, and I really enjoy looking at other people's work, so I think it helped me in that aspect.
