Pocket Ponies

This piece talks about how I have recently been trying to hold on to my childhood and femininity through my teenage years. Growing up and transitioning has made me lose a lot of my childhood interests, and I think that affected how I see myself. I find myself rejecting feminine clothes and colors, even though I know I like them, I've been trying to change this mentality. Overall this painting encompasses a new perspective in my life and the childhood that I am trying to reconnect with.
monica said
the cracks in the sidewalk
extend to the next piece over.
sweat fills my skin while the sun seems
to laugh right in my face.
monica said it’ll be alright.
that the publix is only a couple more blocks down.
that the pool is waiting for us
and we can stuff our bodies full of sugar
and feel goods.
that I can play the music.
we can feel the beat of noah kahan
flow through our bones.
that we can talk about what once was.
monica said it’ll be alright.
we can watch old disney movies
and wash the day away with sodas.
our pjs can brush our wrinkled skin,
hair staining the couch with chlorine.
once our eyes start to droop, and we
promise to stay up late, we’ll grab
the crayons and ask alexa to play
the songs that were just flowing
into our ears.
noah kahan can soothe our troubles,
it’ll echo through the house and turn
our muscles to mush.
we’ll turn on some stupid show
and monica will fall asleep on the
tile floor, so i’ll have to drag her to bed.
monica said it’ll be alright.
she’ll whisper this into the darkness
of my room as i hand her a stuffed animal,
and i hold mine.
monica said it’ll be alright.
that the questions i ask will be
tomorrow’s issues and there's no need
for alarms to be set.
the sun will wash over us through the cracks
in my curtain and nudge us awake.
that we’ll stay in our pjs until her parents
ring the doorbell and
monica promised it’ll be alright.

I wrote this piece in my creative class for a writing assignment. We had to pick words that came to mind, and for one of the words I immediately thought of my best friend and I knew that was gonna be what I wrote about. I wanted to embody her happy go lucky personality which is completely opposite of mine. I wanted to show our friendship through this piece and how our simplest hangouts have so much meaning.
