Moon Jelly
Carly Cantor ‘27
I took this picture at the Monterey Bay Aquarium—one of the most famous aquariums in the USA! Jellyfish are one of my favorite sea creatures, and these moon jelly really spoke to me. The deep blue of the water against their white, translucent bodies provides an interesting visual, and I especially like the one closest to the camera.
The Surrealistic Sea
Why does the world taint the boy
who enjoys watching silver minnows scatter in the sea,
as he peers into the ripples,
and is soon devoured by the manic beast?
If the boy just continued to wonder about life on Mars.
If the boy just continued to watch the tiny fish scatter like stars.
If the boy just continued to avoid the sharks’ teeth inflicting bites of sin
If the boy just stood proudly, showering the world with his beliefs.
Had he never given up on his silly little dreams.
Would the world then bend to his will, willingly calling his name?
The boy was gifted a wisdom of the world older than the ocean,
born to guide his elders drowning in true knowledge.
But they pull his hand dragging him from the wild waves,
until the boy and the world finally stopped dreaming of a hopeless place.
Until nature lost the boy who swam with minnows on land
…no longer
in the long gone surrealistic sea.

My poem, The Surrealist Sea, focuses on the concept of losing people that are childlike who experience the world in a form of wonderment and curiosity. During the process of writing this poem I wanted the reader to feel the essence of nature and feel connected to the boy while reading each line. I hope this poem encourages others to continue to dream even when the people around them try to force them to think differently.
