Book Journal Entry: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter

Maya Bourak ‘26

I am a huge book nerd, and I keep a book journal for fun. This book journal is both a collage and my review of the work, and this specific spread I've chosen is for the Brandon Sanderson novel Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, which I read back in August. The book was really entertaining, but also had a very important underlying message of art vs. AI that I found very important and relevant today. I tried to find paper patterns and washi tape that matched the bright pinks and blues of the cover, while also emulating that artsy black and white style of the characters. I really like what I came up with and included a quote from the book along with my review.

So, my inspiration was basically my actual search history. All the spelling mistakes, all the questions. It's simple, but it's basically how frustrating we, as writers, make our jobs. How we're so worried about perfecting it, getting all the details right, and comparing our first drafts to published works, instead of actually writing the story we want.
