Scopophobia
The Meeting

This is a project I did featuring two of my own original characters from a story I'm writing. The goal was to evoke feelings of scopophobia and portray the main character's fear of making eye contact, particularly with the antagonist, whom she is deathly afraid of. I had initially planned on using watercolor over the micron lineart, but due to my inexperience with watercolor and the fear of ruining the piece, I stuck with stippling instead. Stippling the entire board was definitely a painful process, but even though it felt like I was getting carpal tunnel, I think the end result made it worth it.

I wanted to experiment with backgrounds and how they could contribute to the overall story I was telling in my art work. I derived inspiration from - funnily enough - the old school Cracker Barrel interiors, but twisting it to be in line with what animals would put on the walls instead. I dabbled a bit with character design by attempting unconventional anthropomorphic figures, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. In fact, for most of the character design, I just picked whatever first came to my mind and ran with it. Overall, I think it was relatively successful for a highly experimental piece.
