Bloom

Gabrielle Silva ‘26

My piece, a collaged trace monoprint, features a flower in bloom juxtaposed with pages from “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.” The flower, layered with text that explores the tension between good and evil, echoes the contrasts found within ourselves. Just like the flower’s petals, which can transform in an instant, human nature can, too, shift dramatically and in the blink of an eye. The collage captures this moment of change, comparing the natural world to the human psyche.

Change

The currents beneath us swish,

turn, and rattle our legs,

while we quiver under the punishing tides.

There never really is a change.

Every day we ride with death.

Every breath we take is also death whispering

in our ears.

Each look in the mirror,

our dark curls brush against our dark skin,

and the reflection of death screams at us.

We cry out as death tears us apart,

pulls at our limbs to reveal the flesh

beneath.

And we all look the same.

Crimson veins hold us together.

One heart.

One beat.
